About the Athlete
Hello! My name is Travis Melanson, and I’m a lifelong karateka originally from Shediac, New Brunswick. I began my karate journey 25 years ago in a small local dojo — and from the very first class, I fell in love with the art. Since then, karate has been a constant and defining part of my life.
I currently hold a third-degree black belt (Sandan) with the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF), and a second-degree black belt (Nidan) with the Japanese Karate Association (JKA). I’m also proud to be a guest instructor and judge with Martial Arts Canada, helping to support and grow the karate community across Manitoba, Ontario, and New Brunswick.
Karate has given me discipline, confidence, purpose, and connection — and I strive to give back through instruction, mentorship, and competition.
In recent years, I’ve actively competed, coached, and represented Canadian karate at both local and international levels:
2025: Invited guest seminar leader and tournament judge in Ontario
2024: Gold medalist at ISKF Manitoba Provincials, guest instructor and judge with Martial Arts Canada
2023: 5th place at WKC World Championships (Florida, USA), Bronze medalist at WKC Nationals (Ottawa)
2022–2024: 20+ medals at open and provincial tournaments across Ontario and Manitoba (individual kata and weapons kata)
I’ve also represented Canada internationally at events such as the ISKF Master Camp in Philadelphia (2016), where I trained for seven days with world-class instructors and athletes from around the globe.

Most recently, I earned first place at the Manitoba Provincial Championships, securing the honour of representing my province at the ISKF Karate Nationals in Quebec City this May.
This incredible event goes far beyond competition — it includes:
Four days of intensive seminars led by international masters
Instructor Training, part of my long-term goals as an educator and coach
Judge Certification Clinics, to become a recognized provincial-level judge
This experience is a critical step forward in my path as both a competitor and mentor within the karate community.
Karate is a lifelong passion, but attending national-level events involves costs — including travel, registration, lodging, and equipment. While I’m working and saving personally, I’m hoping to raise $2,000 to help cover the expenses associated with Nationals.

Bonjour ! Je m'appelle Travis Melanson, et je suis un karatéka de toute une vie originaire de Shediac, au Nouveau-Brunswick. J'ai commencé mon parcours en karaté il y a 25 ans dans un petit dojo local — et dès le premier cours, je suis tombé amoureux de cet art. Depuis, le karaté a été une constante et une part essentielle de ma vie.
Je détiens actuellement un ceinture noire de troisième dan (Sandan) avec la Fédération Internationale de Karaté Shotokan (ISKF), et une ceinture noire de deuxième dan (Nidan) avec la Japanese Karate Association (JKA). Je suis également fier d’être instructeur invité et juge avec Arts Martiaux Canada, contribuant à soutenir et à développer la communauté de karaté au Manitoba, en Ontario et au Nouveau-Brunswick.
Le karaté m’a donné de la discipline, de la confiance, un sens et une connexion — et je m’efforce de rendre cela à travers l’enseignement, le mentorat et la compétition.
Ces dernières années, j'ai activement participé à des compétitions, coaché et représenté le karaté canadien à la fois au niveau local et international :
2025 : Invité comme leader de séminaire et juge de tournoi en Ontario
2024 : Médaillé d'or aux Championnats provinciaux ISKF du Manitoba, instructeur et juge invité pour Arts Martiaux Canada
2023 : 5e place aux Championnats du monde WKC (Floride, États-Unis), Médaillé de bronze aux Championnats nationaux WKC (Ottawa)
2022–2024 : Plus de 20 médailles dans des tournois ouverts et provinciaux en Ontario et au Manitoba (kata individuel et kata avec armes)
J'ai également représenté le Canada à l'international lors d’événements comme le Master Camp ISKF à Philadelphie (2016), où j'ai suivi une formation de sept jours avec des instructeurs et des athlètes de classe mondiale venus des quatre coins du globe.

Récemment, j'ai remporté la première place aux Championnats provinciaux du Manitoba, ce qui m’a permis de représenter ma province aux Nationaux de Karaté ISKF à Québec en mai prochain.
Cet événement incroyable va bien au-delà de la compétition — il inclut :
Quatre jours de séminaires intensifs animés par des maîtres internationaux
Formation des instructeurs, partie intégrante de mes objectifs à long terme en tant qu'éducateur et coach
Clinique de certification des juges, pour devenir un juge reconnu au niveau provincial
Cette expérience est un pas crucial dans mon parcours en tant que compétiteur et mentor au sein de la communauté du karaté.
Le karaté est une passion de toute une vie, mais participer à des événements de niveau national entraîne des frais — y compris pour le voyage, l’inscription, l’hébergement et le matériel. Bien que je travaille et épargne personnellement, j'espère lever 2 000 $ pour m'aider à couvrir les dépenses liées aux Nationaux.
